Juan Brennis is a character that Manny Calavera encounters in Grim Fandango. An elemental, he is large, walks on all fours, and has red skin and one eye. He speaks in a gruff voice with a distinct Russian accent.

Description[]

In Year One, Brennis is a disgruntled employee working at the Department of Death. Like Glottis, he is a demon drawn from the earth for one purpose: to be an elevator operator. Unfortunately, the D.O.D. recently installed motion detectors, forcing him to work as a mechanic for the message tube system. When Manny first encounters him, he complains about the salesmen pushing their beer bottles down their message tubes. Brennis is forced to clean out the tube switcher at least once when Manny purposely jams it with hazardous packing material, although he admits to just slipping out as soon as no one is watching.

When Manny returns to El Marrow in Year Four, he finds Juan Brennis again, now operating the elevator in Hector LeMans's casino. As Manny is in disguise, Brennis does not recognize him, although before he will let him pass, Manny must be wearing a proper suit and answer a question about Hector. Brennis boasts that he knows LeMans well, and asks practically impossible questions, which Manny must cheat to answer correctly. Brennis's fate ultimately is unknown.

Trivia[]

  • Brennis's name is never given in-game, though it is revealed in Tim Schafer's Grim Fandango puzzle document.
  • He is referred to as "Tube-Switcher Guy" in the Remastered version's dialogue transcript, and as "Tube-Switcher Repairman" in the game's credits.
